Thanks to Satish from Abacus Peripherals for calling Jay Jacob , ILUG moderator and connecting with Mr Mathew Barker from Ubuntu.

We immediately rushed to Le Meridian to meet the guy in person, and I was kind of surprised to see, how humble he was and how well he communicated with the all of us. Probably it was that he has been in India for the past 4 months.

Although he was here for presenting Ubuntu on the commercial front, he praised us on our efforts and congratulated us on our 10th year. He also asked us to keep the communication with him so that we can look forward to getting some help from Ubuntu to spread the awareness in kerala.

One lucky fellow who came with us got a Mercury motherboard for Intel Core 2 Duo processor and contributed it to ILUG Cochin.

Such events and stalls conducted by companies that reign in the FOSS market will be a tremendous boost to the FOSS penetration into the commercial segment in Kerala and India.Sameer Mohamed Thahirhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15064981643347736384noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8830100030796824062.post-88067383692515142882007-06-06T23:06:00.000+05:302007-06-06T23:11:17.372+05:30Debian GNU/Linux 4.0 Etch availableDebian Etch DVDs are available with me.

AMD64 3 DVDS
i386 3 DVDs

Contact me at :
09446717254
04842555120

sameerthahir at yahoo dot comSameer Mohamed Thahirhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15064981643347736384noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8830100030796824062.post-75363885684773710882007-05-04T20:47:00.000+05:302007-05-04T20:50:34.656+05:30Debian GNU/Linux 4.0 Etch available with meDebian Etch DVD set is available with me.
Architecture : i386
Release : 4.0r0
3 DVD Set

Anyone requiring a copy can contact at gnu.bhai@gmail.com
or call me at 09446717254Sameer Mohamed Thahirhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15064981643347736384noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8830100030796824062.post-23691664763233127472007-04-10T08:38:00.000+05:302007-04-10T08:44:32.226+05:30Debian Etch is here..At last the wait is over, a fruitful one, after 21 months of development, Debian Project has released Debian GNU/Linux Etch 4.0, Its celebration time once again....

The most trusted Swathanthra Software OS on the planet has
released its latest version. :::

Debian GNU/Linux "Etch" "Version 4.0".

http://www.debian.org/News/2007/20070408

About Debian

Debian GNU/Linux is a free operating system, developed by more than a thousand volunteers from all over the world who collaborate via the Internet. Although the number of people who attended the seminar was lesser than the ILUG team, the seminar was pretty interactive. We were amazed at the level of knowledge some people showed while we spoke.

Reju, JJ, Balakrishnan Sir and me spoke.

Reju gave an introduction to the human values and how Swathanthra Software was important to us.

JJ gave an actual idea of how Freedom is in the field of Software just like in all other fields.

Balakrishnan Sir tried to focus on the concept of Freedom compared to the Freedom we gained as a country and how the concept of community can evolve.

I talked about how we need to learn about technology and understand its basics and how we can utilize this freedom for the good of the society.

It was a good experience for the members due to the in depth analysis of the philosophy and ethics behind Free Software.Sameer Mohamed Thahirhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15064981643347736384noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8830100030796824062.post-82651807690328809482007-04-01T06:16:00.000+05:302007-04-01T06:24:44.665+05:30Second article in MadhyamamThe second article by the member of "The Indian Linux Users Group, Cochin Chapter " has been published in the Madhyamam supplement, Info Madhayamam. The article is published as a two part series, with the second part appearing next week.

The title goes "Swathanthra Software Distribution". Unfortunately the title has an ambiguity in it, with the term "distribution" looking like a verb rather than a noun. But a screenshot of the Debian Website, with a size enough to capture the readers attention to the text in the website, talks about the Debian GNU/Linux OS, hence can reduce the misconception regarding the intended aim of the article.

I personally thank Mr V K Abdu, Editor of Info Madhyamam and applaud Madhayamam's initiative for the concept of Freedom and Free Software.

The article basically talks about the GNU/Linux Distribution and Debian specifically. It talks about the basics of an OS installation with specific references to GNU/Linux.

The article will help a new user understand the basic concept of Installation and take him through the installation steps in the coming weeks.Sameer Mohamed Thahirhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15064981643347736384noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8830100030796824062.post-10580282183639900922007-03-30T06:38:00.000+05:302007-03-30T07:10:11.003+05:30Gandhi Peace FoundationAn upcoming seminar on Free Software will be presented by the "Indian Linux User Group, Cochin Chapter" on 7th April 2007 at Ernakulam. We are thinking of several topics for the seminar. Primary importance would be given to the aspect of Freedom and rights in the field of Information Technology.

I also think that the importance of an Operating System to a common man and how Free Software and GNU/Linux can affect him also need to discussed.Sameer Mohamed Thahirhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15064981643347736384noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8830100030796824062.post-24394910251844664152007-03-16T06:45:00.000+05:302007-03-16T07:04:36.138+05:30Free Software Article in "Info Madhyamam"
The article composed by Balakrishnan Sir, Venkat, Reju and me has been published in the Information Technology supplement of Madhyamam a leading newspaper of Kerala on Friday 9th March 2007.

The article talks about the core concepts of Free Software and most importantly about the misconceptions behind the term "Free Software".
